On assignment

June 1st, 2008 Posted in Photography | No Comments »

I’m on an assignment to photograph how mobile communication impact people’s life in asia, it’s basically about a series of photos that people come from all walks of life on their phone or texting a sms. Today is a sunny day, so I decided to wander in town to look for my subject, Kluang is a city full of foreign workers, so they are the first target that comes to my mind.

I approached them awkwardly, however I kept improving my technique for the next few times, I started with an introduction first, the brief them about what I’m going to do next. hopefully what I’ve learned from today can help me in the next shooting :)

(I’m looking for model to pose for the project(yeah, you play with a phone :D ), If you are interested please email me at bktan81 [at] gmail.com, thanks!  )

Congratulations weiliang!

(Weiliang & Theary’s wedding, they are both happy couple, what a perfect match!)

Yesterday was Weiliang & Theary’s wedding in malaysia, I’m honored to photograph the whole event for them. The wedding of cambodia side had been held few weeks before, we all have seen the video being showed in the wedding lunch.

It’s so amazing that both of them born in different part of the world, bound to meet and finally commiting their lives together. Destiny? maybe that’s the only thing I could explain all these things.

Talking about weiliang, we are friends almost for a decade. Being gifted, he was always misunderstood by the rest of the students in the high school, people often overlooked his qualities, and that perplexed him. After all these years, it really makes him a tender, warm and caring person. In high school, we were both passionate about computing , I think that’s what bond us together (remember your long-knife-wielding uncle at U-lee computer shop? :P )

I’m glad to be part of the transformation to manhood, you have my blessings and happy marriage!!!!! :D

My favourite all-time song :)

May 18th, 2008 Posted in Life log | 1 Comment »

I always dream of living in a place like that, stressless, care-free almost like an utopia. It reminds me a line in the movie forrest gump - Jenny “Dear God, please make me a bird. So that I could fly far far away…”. At times people face with dilemmas , they tend to either give up or choose the quick solutions, however it’s always not too late to jump to the conclusion. Whatever situation you are in now, hope that you can prevail …

Okay, My favourite all-time song and it’s a cheerful song for you and me

Home on the range

Oh,give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Oh, give me a land where the bright diamond sand
Flows leisurely down the stream;
Where the graceful white swan goes gliding along
Like a maid in a heavenly dream.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Trip to Kota kinabaru

April 26th, 2008 Posted in Photography | 1 Comment »

hi all, It has been a busy week for me, so I didn’t get the time to update my blog. My workload is getting heavier especially after the trip to Sabah/Malaysia. One of the many reasons is that our project’s schedule has been changed to meet the reality, and also after my boss is coming from the States we are working more closely with him.

Another thing that kept me busy last week is to restore our problematic Microsoft share point services. It’s painful to get Microsoft project 2007 connector installed to work with Team foundation system, unknown errors kept popping up and not able to resolve it, that had wasted me a week working day and night kept beating the bust and didn’t get anything substantially done. Anyhow, we have arrived at a simpler solution to get the priority things done first.

That’s all I want to rant about for a busy week. I hope that next week everything will be moving smoothly :D

So going back to the topic. Kota kinabalu. This is the first time that I set foot on east Malaysia. Everything was good during the trip, food was alright, we also experienced good atmosphere in Sabah(I mean better racial integration than the west Malaysia here), friendly tour guide and most importantly the people in the group are all good people. p/s if you want to read more about the trip, click here to chinyee’s blog

Kluang Euro Fun fair 2008 - The feast of light

April 14th, 2008 Posted in Photography | No Comments »

The fun fair is one of the entertainment attractions during Chinese new year in Kluang, I do not know when it started first, but did not see it in my childhood. It only lasted for one month, and then it moved on to another location. There were quite a lot of things in the park can get your adrenalin going, like the euro wheel, merry-go-round, spinning octopus, and some other things(Seriously, I do not know what they called) .Besides all the machines near by the entrance, you could also try your luck with the side stalls in the back for soft toys and lots of other prizes.

I spent about 3 days to get all the right shots, normally from 6pm something to 11pm something. It’s a good experience for me try to be part of the crowd and yet invisible to them. There weren’t any techniques involved, I just tried to avoid all the strange stares and concentrate only on my subjects. However, there was a kid who very interested in my huge camera came up to touch my tripod and his parents stopped him(which I did not mind), hope that the camera can inspire him in the future :D

Okay, the photos are couple of months old, but I just want to put it here , Hope that you enjoy the feast of light :)

Animal cruelty or just culture? you decide

You might be wondering why the dog is caged, it’s one of the vietnamese cuisines in rural areas. Some of the western supremacy countries dictating their so called standards to dog eating culture and claims that it’s not civilized, but don’t be mean to dog eaters, unless you are a complete vegetarian.

According to the tour guide, puppies that aged less than 6 months are slaughtered for meat and mostly male, female dogs are for breeding. For dog lovers, you still able to see those tiny little or pedigree dogs, because they are kept as a pet not for meat :)

Experiencing macro photography

February 20th, 2008 Posted in Photography | 4 Comments »

Taking macro photography is challenging for most of the beginner photographers, it requires lots of patience. You have to bend your back over to look for some tiny bugs in the bush, sometimes your knees go on strike for doing that too much. Million years of revolution has equipped them pretty good basic instincts to adapt the environment as well as avoiding their natural enemies, even you have sighted them but they are not tamed to pose for you.

In most cases, you have to snap as fast as you can before they got away. However it’s rewarding if you got some amazing shots. Thanks to Moi Yik (bring me to her blog) lending her Tamrom 90mm macro lens to me, so that I got the chance to try out macro in the backyard. That’s one of the advantages of living in kampong area(rural area) - always have abundant insects to photograph besides fresh air and orchestra at night.

Technically the best golden hour for insect shooting is in the morning, some dews form on the leaves may add some favors to the photo. Not only that old blooded bugs slow down when the morning temperature is lower and more approachable. However for some reasons I shot in the afternoon for 2-3 hours :|

Another worth noting thing in photographing bugs is that most of photographers use manual focusing instead of Auto-Focusing to get 1:1 , but for me auto fucos is handy when shooting a dragon fly, they are super agile ,fast and intolerant to minor disturbance , so that I need to approach them tactfully, confirming their position and reach my hand slowly(without putting my eye on the viewfinder) and take glimpse from some distance away straight to the viewfinder, AF helped me to keep my subject in focus. Furthermore, I set ISO between 320 to 500 to compensate my shaky hand. Here are some of the photos I took in the experiment.
